A Poster Show for Bike People

ARTCRANKSFO_600x300

ARTCRANK brings the bike art party back to San Francisco this Friday night.

ARTCRANK kicks off its fourth annual show in San Francisco on Friday, October 26 at 111 Minna Gallery. The show continues at Chrome San Francisco through Saturday, November 10.

ARTCRANK is returning to San Francisco for its fourth show, with an Opening Night Party at 111 Minna Gallery in SOMA on Friday, October 26. Afterwards, the show will continue at the Chrome Industries SF store through Saturday, November 10.

The 2012 edition of ARTCRANK SFO features hand-made, bike-inspired posters created by 35 local artists. Admission is free, and limited edition, signed and numbered copies of all posters will be available for $40 each.

The timing couldn’t be better: In the past five years alone, cycling in San Francisco has increased more than 70%. The powers that be at BART are toying with the idea of lifting the age-old rush hour ban prohibiting riders from bringing bikes on trains. And the city is repaving large stretches of the infamously treacherous Market Street to create a smoother, safer riding surface for city cyclists.

Beyond handmade posters, bike art fans have a lot to look forward to at this year’s ARTCRANK San Francisco Opening Night Party:

•  A silent auction for Chrome Industries custom messenger bags with screen-printed designs by Bay Area ARTCRANK artists.

•  A stunning bike sculpture made entirely of various paper stocks by Neenah Paper.

•  Free, secure bike parking outside 111 Minna Gallery, provided by San Francisco Bike Coalition and sponsored by Clif Bar, with a bike photo booth by Spinlister.

•  Specials on craft beer by Widmer Brothers Brewing in ARTCRANK glasses.

•  Proceeds from all of these and other promotions will benefit the San Francisco Bike Coalition — the largest city-based bicycle advocacy group in the nation.

Nearing the end of a 10-city show schedule that started in Austin, Texas and stretched all the way to London, ARTCRANK founder Charles Youel is especially excited about the upcoming event. “Our first show in San Francisco in 2009 marked a moment when we realized the idea of making bike-inspired art as accessible and enjoyable as riding a bike, was huge,” says Youel.

“Today, we’re doing things I never would’ve dreamed possible, and working with artists who we’ve admired for years. We started in Minneapolis, but we grew up in San Francisco. I can’t wait to show off the posters that the artists here have come up with.”
